Art Challenges Stifling of Dissent
If you missed the episode of Boston Legal, "Stick It," rent or buy it. The series is daringly entertaining, dealing with social and moral questions, often with eccentric humor and wit. The acting, writing, and revelatory camera work are blue-ribbon.
A third of the episode revolves a partner's secretary being arrested for tax evasion, an act of civil disobedience. The crown of the hour is the defense attorney's summary speech to the jury addressing the current political atmosphere in the United States: contentious, secretive, invasive, ideologically driven at the expense of the common good, and likening criticism of the White House to treason. The closing argument is grand.
"To announce that there must be no criticism of the president, or that we are to stand by the president right or wrong, is not only unpatriotic and servile, but is morally treasonable to the American public." ~Theodore Roosevelt
